Definition

A zoetrope is a device that creates animation through an optical illusion based on the principle of motion decomposition (the principle of cinema).

The K2 zoetrope is a device with multiple advantages, such as the ability to change animations easily and the option to view a 2-second animation.

Demo

Features of the K2

  • Interchangeable tray. 24 or 48 figurines 3d printed and hand-painted with acrylic
  • Option to change the figurines (magnet + alignment tab)
  • Lid for optimal use in daylight. It also keeps the figures safe, as you mustn’t put your fingers in there. There is an electronic safety feature too.
  • Front panel controls with cam switches:
    • Activate the motor to rotate the turntable in one of three directions (-1, 0, 1)
    • Turn the LED strobe on or off.
    • Change the strobe frequency to test at higher frequencies. This is a bit experimental at the moment, to be tested…

It is bulky, but the width is that of a standard hi-fi unit.

This model is a prototype (POC – Proof of Concept). Why not, one day, develop it into a more aesthetic and less bulky version?

Design

To develop it, I used the following open-source tools:
  • Freecad for the design of the mechanical parts > Create a blog post about Freecad.
  • Blender for character modelling and animation, as well as mechanical assembly, ray tracing simulation and modelling, and rigging (+Python code).
  • GIMP and Krita for character texturing.
  • KiCad for electrical schematics and the development of a bespoke circuit board.
  • Cairo for developing the board’s grid pattern.
  • Inkscape for labels.

Manufacture

Screen module + lock

The 3D-printed ABS lock shaft broke several times.
As a result, new aluminum shafts had to be turned on a lathe.
